"You Must Be Kidding Me"
Yeah, yeah, I know it's been a while since I've written a column but true inspirational genius isn't something that you just pull out of the blue. Of course you're asking yourself at this point what has inspired me to once again sit down and give all of you the wisdom of my words. I'm going to tell you. The NFL draft.
That's right, the NFL Draft. For the uninformed or the uncaring the draft is this Saturday and Sunday. Two days of camping out in front of the TV and watching the future of your selected NFL team being picked right in front of your eyes. The draft is a big occurrence at our house. The wife makes a big pot of soup, I bring in a cooler of beer, the kids watch with their favorite teams' jerseys on. We turn off the phones so we won't be disturbed. We rehash each pick after they have been announced. We cheer when someone from West Virginia is selected. All in all it's one of the best sports days of the year.
OK, you know I'm lying. The wife doesn't make a pot of soup. She actually wonders how any sane person can sit through the draft and remain coherent. The kids don't wear their favorite teams' jerseys. They don't have favorite teams, they don't even watch football. I'm not going to sit with a cooler of beer and watch. I will actually have to TIVO it and watch it later since I will be at my sons' baseball games. So what is the big deal about the draft? I'll tell you what. The draft hasn't even taken place and my preferred team of choice, the Kansas City Chiefs have already screwed it up. They have taken the cornerstone of their defense, Jared Allen, a player who had 15 and 1/2 sacks last season, a player in his prime at 26 years of age, a player, who if he is not one of the top three defensive ends in all of football is, at least, within spitting distance of them. And. Traded. Him. Brilliant move, absolutely brilliant. Is there any reason why I don't carry through with my threat from so many columns ago and find a new team to root for? Please, can anyone out there give me one good reason not to switch allegiance to the Falcons? OK, just kidding again, I won't cheer for the Falcons. Let's get back to the Chiefs and the draft. They traded Allen to the Minnesota Vikings for the 17th pick in the first round and two 3rd round choices. Unless there is the second coming of Joe Green somewhere in this draft, they have screwed up again. But don't call me on Saturday to tell me. I've got TIVO, remember.
As always, good luck in your matches.
