"Wimbledon 2005 Recap"
The tennis world is back in order after Roger Federer's domination of Wimbledon
yet again. There were actually living and breathing so called
tennis analysts out there who were doubting King Roger after
his semifinal losses in both the Australian and French Opens.
Put him on grass though and he's next to unbeatable. Meanwhile
it took exactly four matches for the French Open winners (Nadal
and Henin-Hardenne)and one of the finalists (Puerta) to be
bounced from the tournament. It makes Bjorn Borg's accomplishments at Wimbledon
all the more impressive. Andy Roddick gave one of the better post match interviews
in recent memory after the final with Federer. For all of Lleyton Hewitt's moaning
and crying over Roddick's number two seeding while he (Hewitt) was seeded third
it still remains the correct order of things. In the past three years only Federer
has beaten Roddick on grass. Had we had a Roddick-Hewitt semifinal it still would
have been Roddick against Federer in the final. Roddick had better plan on drinking
plenty of beers because there is no way he will beat Federer on grass with the
liability he calls a backhand.
For the Huddled Masses it was an OK tournament. Max Mirnyi
made it into the fourth round before being taken out by Thomas
Johansson. Ivan Ljubicic lost in the first round and has been
dropped from the Jerry Rules rankings. Fernando Gonzales attains
hero status after advancing to the quarters. The Bryan Boys
make it to their fourth major final in a row and for the fourth
straight time come out the runner-ups. For whatever reason
they cannot avoid choking in the big one.
I am going to try and maintain as positive an outlook on the
reemergence of Venus Williams as I can. Her victories over
Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport were indeed exciting
tennis to watch. When she is on (as she was in these two matches)
she is capable of beating anyone. Unfortunately, along with
the great tennis, we were subjected to her nauseating celebration
after the final. In contrast to the quiet dignity of Federer
we were forced to watch Williams's juvenile display of how
many times she could jump up and down. Thank goodness for the
off switch on my TV. As sister Venus showed us how to win without
class so did Serena show how to lose without class. After her
third round loss to Jill Craybas it was just b*tch and moan,
b*tch and moan. Just once I would like one of them to give
credit to their opponents after defeat. All in all, I thought
that was pretty positive. Not near as bad as I thought it was
going to be.
As always, good luck in your matches.

Tennis Factoid
This is the actual truth and not something I've made up.
Last Year Lleyton Hewitt lost to the eventual champion
in all four majors. This was the first time this has happened
since 1983 when Ivan Lendl accomplished it.
