The Mental Game
by Troy Macisak - Director of Tennis, James Creek

The mental game of tennis is such an important part of the game that it is so often forgotten, and very seldom taught. While in competition we evaluate and teach the areas of mental toughness. This has helped our members succeed on the court during ALTA and USTA matches more than any positioning or technical lesson. The improvement gives instant results because every person no matter what your skill level can learn and use the mental techniques and there is no downward learning curve. It is all improvement from the start.

Tennis in Atlanta evolves so much around the doubles game and I believe when you put doubles players together there are three main mental parts to a successful doubles team. First do the partners play at the same pace in between the points? (Do they move around together or is one partner following the other.) Second from playing at the same pace do our partners communicate together between points with ease and enjoyment or is the communication forced. Third do our partners work together on the court that includes trusting their partner when incorporating a change, accepting the advice from their partner, and finally do both players feel as equals when contributing advice or change. If these three areas exist in your doubles pairs you have great doubles teams regardless of the skill level these teams will be tough to beat. At the Concourse Athletic Club we try to put our tennis members into situations of competition in team practices, lessons and also during our competitive drills.
