Jerry Rules

As unbelievable as this may seem I'm about to write something positive about the Williams sisters again. In doing so this is also a positive reflection upon Roger Federer (who, I readily admit, is much more easier to write about.) For Federer, it has not been the best of years so far. No Slam titles, being blown out by Nadal at the French, beaten again by Nadal at Wimbledon, the number one ranking gone (maybe never to be seen again). For the Williams sisters it has been more successful. Venus defending her title at Wimbledon, beating Serena in the final and then teaming together to win the doubles. All three came to the Olympics with the goal of taking home a gold medal, preferably in singles but not to be thrown away if it came in doubles. Federer continued his downslide in singles, losing to James Blake. James Blake? Federer must have been ready to chuck his rackets into the nearest trash receptacle and call it a year. Forget the upcoming US Open, just start over at the Australian Open next year. James Blake? You must be kidding me. Same for the Williams sisters, situated on opposite sides of the draw. What could be better than Gold and Silver for the sisters? Only trouble was, they were upset early in singles also. Which brings us to the point of this column. It would have been, indeed, easy for all three to hang their heads and not put forth their best efforts in the doubles. But this is the Olympics. And a Gold Medal is still, just that, a Gold Medal. The Williams sisters romped through through their draw (I know they went three sets in the semis) to win the Gold Medal match in a laugher. Federer teamed with Stanislas Wawrinka to beat some of the best doubles teams in the world, including the Bryan Brothers, to win the Gold. I'm not saying that Federer should scrap his singles career just yet but he could definitely add some Slam titles to his resume by competing in the doubles also. Maybe team with Nadal. Anyway, congratulations go out to all three (actually four, counting Wawrinka).
