The Bryan Bros clinched the the tie with another dominant performance and record tying 14th Davis Cup win. Nice hard fought singles wins by Roddick and Blake gave us the initial two point lead. Look for the team to face France on April 11-13 in Winston Salem, NC. TV schedule will be posted as soon as available.

| BRING ON FRANCE. The United States started the defense of their Davis Cup victory of 2007 with a 4-1 over Austria. We all knew that with Austria having a home match, and therefore their choice of court surface, that we would be playing on the slowest red clay available. I don't think the U.S. squad was expecting the clay catastrophe that awaited them. If you didn't happen to catch the matches on Versus or the Tennis Channel (free plug there, guys) the courts were a concrete floor with 3 inches of red clay brought in and compacted on top. I don't claim to be a expert on clay court construction but this method obviously wasn't working. The players from both squads were constantly having to tamp back in bare patches of clay that had dislodged from the players sliding into shots. Workers were coming out after virtually every game to spread and tamp the clay back into place. Not exactly the best conditions but that was the court Andy Roddick and James Blake had to play on for the first singles rubbers, and they didn't disappoint us. Roddick played one of his better clay court matches ever in beating Jugen Melzer in five sets. James Blake was down 7-5, 5-2 to Stefan Koubek and it looked like the thing was about to be even. But then Blake started ripping winners from everywhere on the court and won 17 out of the last 21 games. With the U.S. up 2-0 did anyone really think that the Heroes of the Huddled Masses, Bob and Mike Bryan, were going to lose? No way. They were totally dominant in dismantling Melzer and Julian Knowle in straight sets gaining a measure of payback against Knowle for last year's U.S. Open loss. Next up is France on April 11-13 in Winston-Salem. With a squad of Gasquet, Tsonga, Clement and Llodra this should be a tough test for the United States. Get your tickets early. |

 Orzo Pasta Salad
1 cup orzo, cooked a la dente
1 bunch steamed asparagus
1 yellow, 1 red pepper, cut into chunks
1/4 cup Olive Oil
2 tb. Balsamic Vinegar
2 ts. Dijon Mustard
2 ts. each S/P
1/4 cup fresh chopped basil
Cook orzo according to directions on the container and cool. Chop asparagus into 1 inch pieces and add to orzo along with the rest of the ingredients. Garnish with fresh basil. |
