| Did you hear the one about the fans who went to see a tennis match and a soccer riot broke out? OK, maybe that's exaggerating a little bit but that is apparently what almost happened at the ongoing Australian Open. In case you missed it on ESPN I'll set the scene for you. Chile's Fernando Gonzalez was up against Konstantinos Economidis of Greece in a first round matchup. A contingent of Greek fans were beginning to get a little too boisterous and security guards were called to calm things down. From there things went downhill. A lot of pushing and shoving and, according to an Australian Open spokesperson (note how PC I am), a punch thrown at a security guard. Things probably could have been handled by escorting a couple of the fans from the stadium except for the use of pepper spray by the security members. Watch the replay as, on two separate occasions, a security guard runs forward, releases the pepper spray into the face of a fan, and then RUNS AWAY! Gee, only problem with pepper spray is that, in the wind, it sort of spreads out. Up to thirty people ended up having to be treated. A number of the Greek fans (or sports zealots, whichever you prefer) were removed and the match resumed with Gonzalez winning. And we think our weekend matches are fun. |

Recipe of the Month

Spicy Vegetable Soup
1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 can double strength beef broth
1 can RoTel tomatoes
1 jar Paul Newman's Sockarooni sauce
1 jar of water
1 small bag of carrots
3 diced, skin on potatoes
1 bag McKenzie's gumbo vegetable mix
Brown meat, add all ingredients except frozen veggies. Simmer for a few minutes and then add veggies. Cook about 30 minutes. Serve courtside!!! |
