Owning That Extra Inch
by Tom Veneziano

Tennis is a game of fractions of inches which determine whether points are won or lost. A fraction of an inch difference as to where the ball is hit on your racket as well as on the court (be it the baseline, sidelines, service boxes or net tape) can be the difference of winning or losing points, games, sets and matches.... Jerry Rules
For those of you unable to attend last Sunday's doubles exhibition at the Racket Club of the South you really missed out on some excellent tennis. The main drawing card was supposed to be The Heroes of the Huddled Masses, the Bryan Brothers but they, along with Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles were unable to make it due to plane trouble. There were still plenty of players left to entertain the crowd: The Davis Cup doubles team of Israel, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, Travis Parrott of the United States, Jordan Kerr of Australia, the University of Georgia's John Isner (all six foot ten of him) and others. Former Davis Cup Captain Tom Gorman was there and it was a pleasure to meet and talk with him. The Pro-Am was enjoyed by all who participated in it (even though I was hooked on a line call by one of the pros, you can ask my partner at the time, Linda). Hopefully, Wayne Bryan and Brian Parrott will enjoy continued success in their effort to save the doubles game in the pro ranks. Roger Federer is fun to watch but I can only watch him dominate lower players so many times. Speaking for myself, I'd much rather watch an exciting doubles match on TV than a replay of Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco. It's time for the ATP to wise up and give doubles the attention and respect it deserves.

Recipe of the Month
Artichoke Bread
This is a great filling tennis food that everyone loves! Obviously for tennis, you will bring it warm and it will be served room temp. or the temp of the day. Even people that don't like artichokes will like this one. You've probably eaten this at a match but wasn't sure of the recipe.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

1/4 cup butter
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons sesame seeds
1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained & chopped
1 cup shredded monterey jack cheese
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 cup sour cream
1 loaf French bread
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (I prefer sharp)

Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add garlic and sesame seeds. Saute until lightly browned. Remove from heat and stir in artichoke, monterey jack, parmesan and sour cream. Cut bread in half lengthwise. Scoop out center of each piece, leaving a 1 inch shell. Add approximately 1/2 of the removed bread pieces to the artichoke mixture.
Stir to blend. Spoon artichoke mixture into french bread shells and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Place on baking sheet and cover with foil. Bake for 25 minutes.
Remove foil and bake 5 minutes more.
Cool slightly and cut into slices.
