OK, the season ending championships are over and it proved a couple of things.
Number one, Federer is making a mockery of the rest of the men's field. He lost exactly one match after the month of May. He has also made theannouncement that he will not participate inSwitzerland's opening Davis Cup tie to put more focus on his tournament play. I'm not quite sure how much more focus he needs to put on it. Roddick will never be a serious challenge until he can make his backhand more of a weapon and not so much a liability. Nadal was in Federer's head for awhile but if Federer loses more than two matches to Nadal next season it will be a surprise. Ljubicic does not have enough of a weapon to bother Federer. The same can be said for James Blake. Can Federer win the Grand Slam next year? Most definitely. Will he win the Slam? Probably not. For all of Federer's talent it still will be too much of a task to be on his game for all four majors.
Number two. It seems like the Belgian Quitter is willing to play through an injury as long as she is up in a match. She played the entire Sony Ericson Championships with a leg injury ( I will at least give her credit for that). In the final she was never in trouble against Mauresmo. Would she have stayed in the match had she fallen behind early as she did in the Australian final? Who's to say. And for all of you readers who will email me about still calling her the Belgian Quitter, check the facts. She is Belgian and she quit in the final of a slam. On these pages she will never erase that fact. |
