| Keep the American flags handy, the United States Davis Cup team is headed to the finals. By defeating the Swedish team this past weekend the U.S. squad advances to face the defending champions from Russia. Even though the Russians defeated us in last year's Davis Cup semis we should be a slight favorite going into the final match since it will be a home tie for us and therefore, our choice of court surface. I'll bet you a hundred dollars to a doughnut that it will not be a slow indoor clay court such as we faced in last year's semis. I'm betting on a fast indoor carpet or rebound ace type surface. I don't know for sure since the U.S. Tennis Association did not call me to ask for my opinion. The top ranked team of the Bryan Brothers gives us the advantage over anyone the Russians can pair together for the doubles point but the singles matches are a tossup. Even though Andy Roddick is ranked behind Nikolay Davydenko he should be favored to win against him and also against Igor Andreev, Dmitry Tursunov or Mikhail Youzhny, whoever is playing #2 singles for Russia. The big question for the U.S. is if Roddick stumbles in one of his matches, can James Blake pick up the slack? He did not play very well against Thomas Johanssen in last week's tie and has a dismal record in five set matches. Let's hope that Andy Roddick and the Bryan Brothers can shoulder the load and bring the Davis Cup back home. |

Recipe of the Month

 Eggplant Dip with Pita
Boil 1 eggplant in salted water for approximately 10 minutes until tender but not overcooked.
Drain the eggplant in a colander. Refrigerate the eggplant until it's at least room temp.
In a food processor, place
the chilled eggplant
juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 cup feta cheese
1/2 cup of light sour cream or fat free
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 ts. cayenne pepper for some heat
Puree until smooth.
Put in a pretty dip bowl and put in refrigerator until serving.
Sprinkle with feta cheese and or banana peppers as an added garnish.
Slice pita bread in small triangles so serve with the dip.
Serves 8-10 people or a group of ladies. |
